Key takeaways

  • Private sport fishing and spearfishing charters for up to 6 guests: 4 hours $1,000, 6 hours $1,300, 8 hours $1,600 per boat.
  • Run by our partners Day Break Charters from Green Cay Marina, with U.S. Coast Guard certified captains.
  • Beginners are welcome. Gear and bait are included, and you can keep your catch.
  • Fishing isn’t allowed inside Buck Island Reef National Monument, so charters fish outside it.

St. Croix is a great island for fishing because deep water is close. From the overlook on Buck Island, the National Park Service says, you can see where the island’s shelf falls away into the Puerto Rico Trench, 5,000 feet deep. That deep water is where offshore anglers go looking for big game fish. Our private fishing and spearfishing charters are run by our partners Day Break Charters from Green Cay Marina, east of Christiansted. Here’s how they work.

How much is a fishing charter in St. Croix?

Every charter is private: the whole boat for your group of up to 6 guests. Prices are the same for sport fishing and spearfishing.

CharterLeavesPrice per boat
4 hours7 am or 12 pm$1,000
6 hours7 am or 12 pm$1,300
8 hours7 am$1,600

A $300 deposit is taken when you book online on Day Break Charters’ secure booking site. Crew gratuity isn’t included (20–25% is typical).

Sport fishing or spearfishing?

Sport fishing

Rod-and-reel sport fishing, offshore or closer to shore, for wahoo, mahi, tuna and more. Fishing gear and bait are included, and the crew will teach beginners. You’re welcome to keep your catch, and the crew will gladly clean it to your preference.

Spearfishing

A guided spearfishing trip with spear, snorkel mask and fins included. Beginners are welcome, and your guide will show you how it’s done.

What can you catch in St. Croix?

Offshore, St. Croix anglers head for the drop-off, where the shelf falls into deep water. Trolling along the edge is where you have a chance at wahoo, mahi mahi, tuna and billfish such as marlin. Diving seabirds are a good sign that fish are feeding near the surface. Closer to shore, there’s fishing in the shallows too. What you catch depends on the season and the day, and your captain will choose where to fish based on the conditions.

Good to know: fishing is prohibited throughout Buck Island Reef National Monument, so charters fish outside the park (NPS: outdoor activities). For rules on size and bag limits, ask your captain.

Who are fishing charters for?

Everyone from first-timers to experienced anglers. The charters are family-friendly, no experience is needed, and the crew will help everyone, from kids catching their first fish to anglers who know exactly what they’re after. With up to 6 guests and the whole boat to yourselves, you can fish the way your group wants.

4, 6 or 8 hours?

  • 4 hours ($1,000): a good first trip or a half day that leaves time for something else. Choose a 7 am or 12 pm start.
  • 6 hours ($1,300): more time to run offshore and work the fish. Also 7 am or 12 pm.
  • 8 hours ($1,600): a full day on the water from 7 am, for the most time chasing big fish.

What to bring on a fishing charter

  • Snacks and drinks for your group. You can bring your own, including alcohol, but no glass bottles.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen. No spray-on sunscreen, please.
  • A hat and sunglasses
  • A camera for the catch
  • Cash for your crew’s gratuity

Where do fishing charters leave from?

Charters leave from Green Cay Marina, east of Christiansted. Your booking confirmation shows the exact dock. Please arrive a little early so you can load up and go at your start time.

Cancellation and weather

  • Cancel at least 72 hours before your charter for a full refund of your deposit or payment.
  • Cancellations less than 72 hours before the charter forfeit the entire deposit.
  • If the captain cancels for bad weather, you get a full refund.

What to expect on a spearfishing trip

Spearfishing trips are guided, and beginners are welcome: you don’t need to have done it before, and your guide will show you how it’s done. The spear, snorkel mask and fins are provided, along with bottled water and ice, so all you need to bring is your swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen and snacks. It’s the same private charter as sport fishing, for up to 6 guests, at the same prices. Like sport fishing, spearfishing happens outside Buck Island Reef National Monument, where the NPS prohibits fishing and collecting of any kind.

How to book

  1. Pick sport fishing or spearfishing, then choose 4, 6 or 8 hours and your start time.

Our own boats run private Buck Island snorkel, sailing and sunset charters from the same marina, so the rest of your group can spend the day on the reef or at Turtle Beach while the anglers head offshore. Smooth Recovery, Inconceivable and Good Times all leave from Green Cay Marina.
